Bioenergy Specific ERP Solution by MHG Systems makes it to the innovation competition final

The Forest Bioenergy conference sponsor

MHG Systems has been chosen to represent Finland in the international final of the IT service company Logica’s innovation competition. The company’s innovative solution is used to manage biomass supply chain and to monitor its quality, which helps energy companies to increase the use of biomass as an energy source as required by new directives.

Using MHG Systems, energy companies and biofuel suppliers get detailed information regarding the quality, quantity, energy contents and origin of the biomass.

"Our typical client is a power plant, whose procurement processes are based on the raw materials’ standard quality. Composition of biomass – reed canary grass, wood chips, peat – varies and it contains a significant amount of water, which can dramatically interfere with the production process,” managing director Seppo Huurinainen of MHG Systems explains.

"We can offer our mutual clients an operative solution service in order to optimise the production of biomass, and Logica, as an international agent, can hold a key position there to present the Finnish innovation to the rest of the world,” Heikki Tiihonen of Logica states.

Using biofuel requires restructuring of the production processes

"The use of forest fuels has increased during this decade to over 5 million solid cubic metres and the aim is to increase the use of forest chips in Finland to 15 million solid cubic metres by 2020. A large scale use of forest chips, however, will require investing in logistics and operative systems,” says Huurinainen. "In addition to forest, the biomass growth potential in Europe also comes from the crops, where the utilisation of crop energy could tenfold. In the United States, which is the world’s largest supplier of biomass, the energy provided by biomass is expected to triple by 2030.”

With MHG Systems’ innovative solution, the energy producers can increase the transparency of their business, when the origin and the production chain of biomass can be traced.

"The MHG solution is a natural part of Logica’s operation that supports sustainable development: our aim is not only to offer our clients solutions that lessen the strain on the environment, but also to decrease the strain in our own activity,” says Heikki Tiihonen.

Logica’s innovation partner competition is aimed at finding partners in small and medium sized companies to create solutions for our mutual clients. The winner of the competition in Finland will participate in the final event held on May 17th in Stockholm, where ten country winners will present their solutions to the Logica panel.
